Becoming a Recognized Organization
Starting a Club/Organization
Either the advisor or a student leader in an organization must submit the following information to the Student Government Association in order to gain official recognition:
- A roster of at least seven (7) students, including their Blinn ID numbers, who will be members of the organization. This roster must be submitted using the designated form available in the Forms section of your campus's Student Leadership and Activities (SLA) webpage.
- A constitution that meets the criteria outlined in this document, including a statement of non-discrimination and a procedure for officer removal. A sample template is provided at the end of this packet.
- A signed advisor agreement.
Submit all required documents to your campus's SLA Director or Coordinator for approval, which will also be reviewed by the SGA President.
Determining Organization/Club Status
Organizations and clubs are categorized as one of the following:
- Honor Societies- Recognize academic excellence or leadership in a specific field.
- Political- Promote political ideologies, awareness, civic engagement, or support specific parties or issues.
- Professional- Prepare students for careers in specific fields through networking, development, and mentorship.
- Religious- Focus on spiritual growth, worship, and fellowship within specific faiths.
- Service- Dedicated to volunteering and community engagement.
- Social- Foster friendships and social interaction through events, outings, and shared interests.
- Student Governance- Represent the student body in decision-making, advocate for student needs, and coordinate campus events.
Active Organization/Club Status
In order to be considered an active club or organization by the Office of Student Leadership & Activities each club must:
- Have a Blinn College faculty or staff advisor
- Have a constitution and bylaws on file
- Have regularly scheduled meetings at least twice a month
- Maintain and submit ALL required paperwork to the Office of SLA in a timely manner (Ex. Event/Facility Request Form, Food Order Form, Fundraising Proposal Request, Activity Reporting Form, etc.)
- Maintain a healthy fundraising account and refrain from having a negative balance
- Organize at least one (1) on-campus activity from the following options per semester (activity can be from any category). Each organization must complete at least 1 activity from all categories (total of 3 activities) per academic year.
- Activity benefiting the College (i.e. service, social, educational)
- Examples: campus clean-up, school dance, movie night, health fair, etc.
- Activity benefiting the Community (i.e. service, social, educational)
- Examples: charity fundraiser, volunteering at non-profit, etc.
- Activity benefiting the Club/Organization (i.e. social, fundraiser, educational)
- Examples: internal movie night, car wash fundraiser, hosting a guest speaker, etc.
- Attend the bi-monthly Student Government Association meetings.
- Clubs are allowed to miss up to two meetings in a semester without it counting against their organization. On the third miss, these will start to affect the Organization requirement rubric.
Rejection of an Application
According to the Blinn College Board Policy (FKC (Local)), if the Vice Chancellor of Student Services does not approve the application for registration, he or she shall provide the applicant with a copy of a written statement of the reasons for refusal, and the applicant may appeal to the Chancellor.
The Chancellor may take one of the following actions:
- Affirm the Vice Chancellor of Student Services’ decision
- Reverse the Vice Chancellor of Student Services’ decision
- Appoint a committee to conduct a hearing and report its findings to the applicant and the Chancellor, who shall then take final action.
Loss of Registration
According to the Blinn College Board Policy (FKC (Local)), a registered student organization may have its registered status cancelled if it:
- No longer meets the eligibility requirements; or
- Violates Blinn College Board Policies and procedures or local, state, or federal law.
- Upon determination that the organization is no longer fulfilling the purposes and/or functions described in its constitution.
Note:
- The Office of SLA reserves the right to determine the status of a club’s registration via the Director’s discretion with reasonable cause.
- A student organization whose registration has been revoked may appeal to the Vice Chancellor of Student Services who may take appropriate action regarding the issues. If the organization is not satisfied with the decision, it may appeal that decision to Chancellor.
- A student organization whose registered status has been revoked shall be prohibited from reapplying for registered status for a period described in the revocation notice. The prohibition shall be for a period of not less than four months following the date of the notice and may be permanent. The revocation shall be effective College and Districtwide.
Disciplinary Violations
- In addition to the revocation of registered status, violations of College/District policies and procedures or local, state, or federal law shall subject the student organization and its individual members to disciplinary action in accordance with policies FM and FMA (via Blinn College Board Policy FKC (LOCAL))
- Students that are removed from housing, or receive a CTW, must be removed from the registered student organization immediately.
