General Educational Development (GED) Testing

About the GED

The GED measures the outcome of a high school education. There are four test sections:

  • Mathematical Reasoning - 120 minutes
  • Science - 95 minutes
  • Social Studies - 75 minutes
  • Reasoning through Language Arts (Reading and Writing) - 155 minutes

Idividuals Eligible to take the GED

Anyone 18 years or older who has not earned a high school diploma or officially withdrawn from high school may sit for the test. Individuals 16 and 17 years of age may also sit for the exam, but require more documentation as noted within registration.

Number of Tests Allotted Per Day

You can only register for one or two sections on a test day.

Brenham Test Site Information

Tests are administered one to two Fridays each month. A list of test dates are available when you create an account with GED Testing Services. The physical address is 802 Green St. Brenham, TX 77833.

Bryan Test Site Information

Tests are administered several Tuesdays and Thursdays each month. The Testing Center is closed during some holidays. Testing location: 3125 South Texas Ave, Bryan, TX in Room 171 (Behind the H.E.B.).

Essential Items for Test Day

  1. Current government-issued photo ID. A GED examinee is required to present current government-issued photo identification to be admitted on the day of the test.
  2. Proof of residency in the State of Texas (e.g., a utility bill with your name and address).

*If the following items are not provided, you will not be allowed to test. No exceptions will be made.

Online Testing Information

Ged.com offers the option of a proctored online test. There are specific technical requirements for the equipment used. You can check these requirements at ged.com. The online test also needs to be scheduled through ged.com

Cost

In-person Test:

Full Exam: $145
One Section: $36.25

Online Test:

Full Exam: $169
One Section: $42.25

Payment via credit card or debit card is due at the time of online registration. If you need to re-take an in-person section, GED Testing Services offers a discounted retake program of $13.75 per subject test. There is no discount for the online test. This discount applies to two retests (per subject), taken within 12 months of your initial failed subject test. There is no wait time between tests; however, if you do not pass a subject test three times in person, or two tests online you do have to wait 60 days before re-testing.

Updated Score Levels

Approved Exemption for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

Effective May 12, 2021, students who meet the college readiness benchmarks on the state's approved high school equivalency tests will qualify for a TSI exemption. The approved tests and relevant benchmarks are:

GED:

  • A minimum score of 165 on the Mathematical Reasoning subject test shall be exempt for mathematics
  • A minimum score of 165 on the Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) subject test shall be exempt for English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)

Certificates

The Certificate is issued approximately five business days after you pass the entire test battery – all four subject tests. TEA will email your initial certificate in a PDF file to the email address used to register for the exams.
