Interpreting Services

Blinn College provides interpreting and transcription services for deaf or hard of hearing students through Disability Services. To receive these services, students must submit appropriate documentation and obtain approval from Disability Services. Approved accommodations may include note-taking assistance, preferential seating, sign language interpreters, transcription services, and extended time on tests.

Required Documentation

Documentation may include:

  • Recent audiology report and audiogram clearly stating the diagnosis and functional limitations

  • Recommended academic accommodations

  • Certificate of deafness from the State of Texas

Requesting Services

  • Requests for interpreting or transcription services must be made at least three weeks before the start of each semester. Submit requests in person or by email to Disability Services, along with a current class schedule.

  • Notify Disability Services immediately if your schedule changes. Disability Services will coordinate with vendors to schedule or adjust your services accordingly.

Attendance and Cancellation Policies

  • Notify Disability Services by phone or email at least 72 hours in advance if you will miss a class.

  • After three "no-show/no-call" occurrences in a semester, services will be suspended for that semester. You must meet with the Director of Disability Services to discuss reinstatement.

  • Interpreter cancellations less than 48 hours in advance result in charges to the department or program.

  • For interpreting/transcription services lasting more than one day, cancellations require at least two weeks’ (10 business days) notice to avoid charges.

Responsibilities When Using Interpreting Services

  • Notify Disability Services of schedule changes or absences at least 72 hours in advance. Last-minute texts or calls are not acceptable.

  • Submit requests for interpreting services outside of regular class meetings at least three weeks in advance (four weeks for events longer than three hours).

  • Special events outside Bryan/College Station are considered case-by-case.

  • Notify Disability Services if interpreting services are unavailable so alternative accommodations can be arranged.

Responsibilities When Using Transcription Services

  • Notify Disability Services of absences or schedule changes at least 72 hours in advance.

  • Follow the no-show/no-call policy (three allowed per semester).

  • Keep transcripts confidential; they are only for your use. Sharing transcripts can result in loss of services.

Transcription Service Details

  • Transcription services provide real-time lecture text via remote captioning technology (laptop, internet, TypeWell software).

  • Students may not be able to interact directly through transcription; professors should repeat audience comments or questions for clarity.

Interpreter's Role

  • Interpreters facilitate communication and do not act as tutors, counselors, or note takers.

  • Communicate directly with interpreters regarding their services or styles. If problems arise, contact Disability Services to resolve them.

Feedback on Services

  • Contact Disability Services immediately if issues arise with interpreting or transcription services.

  • Students are encouraged to provide regular feedback by emailing Disability Services.

Interpreters for Meetings and Special Events

  • Requests must be submitted at least three weeks prior (four weeks for special events requiring advanced interpreter qualifications).

  • Disability Services coordinates interpreter scheduling and provides contact information for both parties.

No-Show Policy

  • Three no-shows per semester are permitted before services are paused.

  • Notification less than 48 hours before class is considered a no-show.

  • After the second no-show, students will receive a reminder of the policy.

  • After the third no-show, services pause until you meet with Disability Services.

  • Special circumstances for reinstating services may be discussed with Disability Services.

Student Responsibilities

  • Introduce yourself and discuss accommodations with professors.

  • Arrange note-taking or captioning accommodations through Disability Services.

  • Notify Disability Services of any schedule changes promptly.

  • Schedule meetings with professors or staff as needed.

  • Cancel interpreter/transcription services at least 48 hours in advance if unable to attend.

  • Be punctual. Interpreters/transcriptionists wait no more than 15 minutes without prior notification.

  • Notify your interpreter/transcriptionist upon arriving in class.

  • Arrange tutoring or academic support as needed.

  • Request interpreter/transcription services for special meetings at least three weeks in advance.

  • Contact Disability Services if you encounter issues or have questions about accommodations.

  • Request or cancel interpreter/transcription services for exams or finals as needed.
