Painting, Sculpture, or Photograph

  1. For original artwork, list artist’s name, italicized title of the artwork, date of composition, institution that houses the work, and institution location (if the location is not listed in the name of the institution, e.g., The Art Institute of Chicago). If the medium and/or materials (e.g., oil on canvas) are important to the reference, include this information at the end of the However, it is not required.
  2. For photographic reproductions of artwork (e.g., images of artwork in a book), treat the book or website as a container (the larger source that contains smaller works). For a second container, first list the title before the contributors. Cite the same bibliographic information, followed by the information for the source in which the photograph appears. Include page or reference numbers (plate, figure, etc.) if provided.
  3. If the artwork was viewed on a museum’s website: treat the website as the container (larger source that contains smaller works) and include the website’s publisher and URL at the end of the citation. Omit publisher information if it is the same as the name of the website. Note the period after the date below, rather than the comma: this is because the date refers to the painting’s original creation, rather than to its publication on the website. Thus, MLA considers it an “optional element.”

Song or Album

Music can be listed differently, depending on the container used. Generally, citations begin with the artist’s name, but they can be listed by composers or performers. Individual song titles are placed in quotation marks. Albums are italicized.
