College life is a turning point in many young adults’ life. It can be a highlight in a young life, but it also can include unfortunate events, some of which are highly preventable. Because of this, Student Leadership and Activities got a head start on promoting student safety with its Community Resource Fairs on all campuses each Welcome Week in August and January. During these events, Blinn provided students with useful information from various community resources about the services available to them in the surrounding community.

Blinn's goal with bringing in these community partners was to educate students regarding the resources available to support them during their college years. Blinn's hope is that providing this information gives its students more knowledge to make better decisions throughout their careers.

During the Spring semester, Blinn holds a series of Safe Spring Break events, where the College brought in campus partners to raise awareness about the dangers spring break raises for college students. With the help of the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse (BVCASA), Blinn highlighted and dispelled many myths and realities of spring break in college. Blinn also introduced an interactive and educational event for students during this time. With the help of Brazos Valley Injury Prevention Coalition (BVIPC) and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Blinn hosted carnival games and a driving simulator for students to experience impaired driving and motor skills. Other partners that participated in Safe Spring Break were the Brazos County Health Department and Success…powered by YOU (SPY)."

Student Leadership and Activities (SLA) on the Blinn College-Brenham Campus strives to proactively address the various issues and challenges college students face today. College students make various decisions and choices outside the classroom that can have lasting and at times negative impacts on their college experience. With the increase in binge drinking across the country, it is essential to provide students with educational opportunities to promote awareness and knowledge of the choices they make. It is critical that students are introduced to information and resources to help them make informed decisions and choices.

With that in mind, Blinn historically has invited its community partners to its Community Resource Fair to share information regarding the services they can provide our students from a holistic perspective. One of those partners was the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse helps us to raise awareness of the impact that alcohol and substance abuse can have on them as individuals.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, Student Leadership and Activities continued its efforts to proactively address the various issues and challenges students face today by partnering with campus stakeholders to provide events and educational activities during our BUC WOW (Buccaneer Weeks of Welcome) program. SLA sponsored the following programs and events: Sending Signals, a Community Resource Fair, ThinkFast, and provided wellness information to students related to drug and alcohol education. SLA invited the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse to speak with students and hand out information in the Student Center.

In spring 2024 Blinn will hold a series of safe spring break events, where the college will again bring in campus partners to raise awareness about the dangers spring break raises for college students.
