The objective of a communication component in a core curriculum, as exemplified by Blinn College's freshman composition courses, is to enable the student to communicate effectively in clear and correct prose, in a style appropriate to the subject, occasion, and audience.

The objective of a humanities component in a core curriculum is to expand the student's knowledge of the human condition and of human cultures, especially in relation to ideas expressed in works of the human imagination.
