JAWS Professional 2020 Basic Setup
Step 1
Click to open JAWS.
Step 2 – Choose Voice
a. Under Options in the opening box, scroll to Voice Profile and select the desired profile.
b. Under Options, choose Voice Adjustment and select:

Desired voice
-
Rate of speech
Adjust pitch, volume, and punctuation as needed, then click OK or Apply.
Step 3 – Speech Options
Under the Utilities tab:

Choose Settings Center
-
Select Speech Options
-
Choose your desired reading options (speech mode, speech on demand, typing echo, mouse echo, etc.)
Click Apply, then OK.
Step 4 – Enable Mouse Echo
In Settings Center:

Click Mouse Echo
-
Verify that Enable Mouse Echo is checked
This allows students to hover the cursor over a sentence or word for selective reading.
You may also adjust:

Mouse Echo Delay
-
Mouse Echo Unit (character, word, line, paragraph)
Click Apply, then OK.
Step 5 – User Echo Options
In Settings Center:

Click User
-
Choose desired Echo options, including:
-
Typing Echo (off, characters, words, characters and words)
-
Screen Echo (echo no text, highlighted text, or all text)
-
Insert Key Mode
-
Key Repeat
-
Show virtual viewer on screen
-
Lower audio volume of programs while JAWS speaks
Click Apply, then OK.
Things to Remember
-
If testing in an open area, students will need headphones for privacy and to reduce distractions to others.

Remember to open JAWS for the student and educate the student on how to use it.

Remember to close JAWS completely after each student use.
