Blinn Board of Trustees approves new Associate of Science in Sport Management

New program emphasizes the business and administration of sports and fitness, with classes anticipated to begin in spring 2027

October 20, 2026

The Blinn College District Board of Trustees approved a new Associate of Science degree in Sport Management during its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20, creating a new academic pathway for students interested in the business and administrative side of sports and recreation.

Pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Blinn anticipates offering the degree beginning in spring 2027, with face-to-face classes planned for the Brenham and Bryan campuses.

Combining kinesiology with business principles, the program prepares students to pursue careers in planning, organizing, budgeting, and managing athletic programs, events, facilities, teams, and organizations. Unlike traditional kinesiology pathways that emphasize the science of human movement and physical activity, Sport Management focuses on the business and administrative operations that support the sports and fitness industries.

“This degree opens new opportunities for students who love sports and want to turn that passion into a career,” said Dr. Shelly Peacock, Assistant Academic Dean for the Division of Arts, Kinesiology, and Agriculture. “By combining business fundamentals with practical experience in event planning and management, we are creating an affordable pathway to a wide range of opportunities in the sport and recreation industries.”

The curriculum includes kinesiology and recreation courses such as Foundations of Kinesiology and Introduction to Recreation alongside business courses such as Principles of Financial Accounting and Principles of Managerial Accounting. Students also can select directed electives based on their individual career plans.

The program prepares students for transfer into bachelor's degree programs in sport management and related fields. Potential transfer destinations include Texas A&M University, Tarleton State University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State University, the University of Houston, and Prairie View A&M University.

The degree also responds to projected workforce demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 16,800 annual openings are projected for meeting, convention, and event planners through 2035, along with approximately 91,100 annual openings across entertainment and sports occupations.

Potential career paths include athletic and recreation administration, collegiate and professional sport operations, athletic event and facility management, and fitness business administration.
