Blinn’s sophomore livestock judging team places first, second at opening contests

Team wins National Barrow Show for first time in program’s history

The Blinn College sophomore livestock judging team is off to a strong start for its 2026-27 season, winning the National Barrow Show and placing second in the Top Notch Swine Judging Contest.

Blinn won Sunday’s National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn., for the first time in program history, with Lane Steen placing second overall. Steen was high individual in reasons as Blinn placed second in team reasons.

Also placing were Dade DeLozier, fifth high individual and 12^th in reasons; Brody Youtz, seventh high individual; and Colton Mullins, sixth in reasons.

The Top Notch Swine Judging Contest, held Sept. 10 at Paragould, Ark., was a solid first outing, said coach Adrian Austin. Blinn placed second overall and second in team reasons.

Individually, Tatum Bales was second high individual and eighth in reasons, Emma Malven was fourth high individual and fifth in reasons, Taylor Eckelberg was sixth high individual and sixth in reasons, and DeLozier was 10^th high individual.

In reasons, Steen was second, Colton Mullins was third, and Sarah Craun was seventh.

Blinn’s freshman team won its division and was high team in reasons.

Wyatt Luddeke was high individual overall and placed first in reasons. Also placing in the top 10 were Sawyer Parker, third high individual and second in reasons; Percy Torrez, fourth high individual and ninth in reasons; Ashlyn Peters, sixth high individual; Levi Malinowski, seventh high individual; Keeley Warnken, 10^th high individual; and Augustus Sexton, fifth in reasons.

Blinn will next compete Sept. 25 at the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo, Texas.

Livestock judging is part of Blinn’s Agricultural Sciences Program, which has one of the most active extracurricular programs in the state.

Blinn offers agriculture classes on all its campuses, with the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex on the Brenham Campus serving as the program’s headquarters. Students can earn degrees in Associate of Science in Agriculture or Associate of Science in Agricultural Business that includes a focus on agribusiness and business. Both degrees are designed to transfer toward agricultural bachelor’s degrees.
