Blinn alumna returns to the Bryan Campus to inspire the next generation of students

Navasota native Marissa Wood now serves as a prospective student recruiter at the campus where she began her college journey

When Marissa Wood graduated from Navasota High School in 2019, she was uncertain about her next steps. Choosing to enroll at the Blinn College-Bryan Campus to start her college journey, she never imagined her search for direction would evolve into a career helping future students find their own path.

“I was familiar with Blinn after taking a dual credit English course in high school,” Wood said. “I decided it would be the best place for me to continue, and after I attended my new student registration event, I knew it was the right decision. I could work, make my own class schedule, and save money.”

Blinn provided Wood with the structure, guidance, and opportunities she needed to grow both academically and personally.

“Starting at Blinn gave me exactly what I needed at that point in my life: direction, support, and the opportunity to grow into myself,” Wood said. “Blinn helped me build a strong academic foundation, understand what would be expected of me at the university level, and develop the confidence to come out of my shell in ways I had not before.”

Wood earned her associate degree in psychology before successfully transferring to Sam Houston State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in the same field. Today, Wood is pursuing a master’s degree in educational psychology at Texas A&M University.

As she advances her education and builds her career, the lessons Wood learned at Blinn continue to have a lasting impact.

“The habits, skills, and self-assurance I first developed at Blinn still shape the way I learn, work, and carry myself today,” Wood said.

That journey has come full circle. Wood now serves as a prospective student recruiter at Blinn, working closely with regional high schools to help students and families navigate the college decision-making process. Her role includes presenting to prospective students, attending recruitment events, and leading campus tours – many of them at the Bryan Campus, where her own higher education journey began.

“I get to share my story and show students what’s possible. I’ve been in their shoes,” Wood said. “I’m the first one in my family to go to college, so I feel like my experiences allow me to be more empathetic to current students who are trying to figure it out for themselves.”

This past spring, Wood had the opportunity to welcome students from Rudder High School to campus, sharing information about Blinn and guiding them through the same spaces that once provided a foundation for her own growth and success.

“Moments like that are especially meaningful because I see so much of myself in the students I meet,” Wood said. “I’m not just sharing information about Blinn. I’m sharing my own testimony.”

For Wood, Blinn represents more than the first step toward a degree.

“Blinn helped shape my path, gave me the confidence to move forward, and ultimately led me back to a role where I now have the privilege of helping other students see what is possible for themselves,” she said. “That is why Blinn will always be more than part of my education story. It is part of who I am.”
