Nayeli Rodriguez, a recent graduate of Flatonia High School, has set her sights on a career in criminal defense law, and she’s making it happen right in her backyard at the Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus.

“I wanted to experience it. I wanted to learn more about it,” she said.

Choosing Blinn-Schulenburg was an easy decision for Rodriguez due to its unmatched affordability, personalized instruction, and accessible faculty.

“I thought, ‘I can live at home and have lower expenses. It’s not that far, and I don’t have to pay for housing,’” she said. “The scholarships I earned in high school pretty much paid for my first semester.”

Rodriguez already is enrolled in several classes relating to her criminal justice degree: Fundamentals of Criminal Law and Introduction to Criminal Justice. As she began her freshman year this fall, Rodriguez already was familiar with Blinn-Schulenburg, having taken dual credit classes there while still in high school, including government, economics, and algebra classes.

“I enjoy my classes,” she said. “It took a little bit of adjusting. College is different from high school, but all the teachers are very helpful and want to see their students succeed.”

Rodriguez plans to transfer to Sam Houston State University or one of the colleges in the University of Texas System.

“After I get my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, I want to go to law school and become a criminal defense attorney,” Rodriguez said. “Being from a rural area, lots of people concentrate on agriculture but I wanted to see more of the legal field.”

Blinn-Schulenburg offers a variety of academic transfer, workforce training, and continuing education classes to fit the needs of any student. For information, call 979-627-7997 or visit www.blinn.edu/schulenburg.
