Blinn College’s Tuesday Evening Choral Society is looking for people who love to sing. Camaraderie and smiles will be provided.

Blinn employees and members of the community are invited to sing with concert choir students each Tuesday at Finke Recital Hall in the Schmidt Building, located at 800 College Ave. on the Brenham Campus.

“We welcome all who want to share in great music and great times together,” said Dr. Larry Smith, Choir Director.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Finke Recital Hall, beginning Sept. 9. Registration is available by emailing Smith at larry.smith@blinn.edu, calling 979-830-4239, or attending a rehearsal. Participation is free.

The Choral Society will have two public performances: the annual “Sounds of the Season” concert Dec. 6 at Round Top’s Festival Hill and a May 5 performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s epic “Elijah.”

Sounds of the Season will feature “Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest.” Audience tickets are available now at www.blinn.edu/boxoffice.

“It’s a beautiful collection of music from the Spanish and Latin American Christmas traditions, arranged for chorus, guitar, harp, and marimba by the modern American composer Conrad Susa,” Smith said.

“Elijah” is a dramatic work that sets the Biblical story of the prophet Elijah to music. The May 5 performance will include a full orchestra and soloists.

“Elijah was the one man who stood up to the corrupt king Ahab, his queen Jezebel, and the prophets of Baal,” Smith said. “Mendelssohn’s music captures all the drama of the Scripture accounts, and the choir members get to play the part of the Israelites, the priests of Baal, even angels of the Lord.”

The Blinn College District Music Department offers small classes, one-on-one attention, practical learning experiences, and easily accessible faculty, ensuring that students are actively engaged in a superior learning environment. For more information, visit www.blinn.edu/music.
