Connected to the Blinn College District for more than three generations, the Schaefer family is cementing their commitment to Blinn students by establishing a new endowed scholarship.

The Schaefers gifted $35,000 to the Blinn College Foundation to establish the Michael and Sandra Schaefer Family Endowed Scholarship. It will be designated for students who attended a Brazos County high school and who are the child of a Blinn faculty or staff member.

“If you’re working for Blinn either teaching or in the administration, it’s because you love giving back in an educational aspect,” Schaefer said. “You teach for the satisfaction of it, so this scholarship will hopefully help the kids of those who work for the College by supporting them the way their family supported so many other Blinn students.”

Michael Schaefer is president of Schaefer Custom Homes, a custom residential home builder based in the Bryan/College Station area. After building his first home in 1984 when he was an 18-year-old Blinn student, Schaefer established a company that combines superior quality construction and detailed workmanship to create homes that are innovative, practical, and beautiful.

In addition to his work in residential and commercial real estate development, Schaefer has strong ties to Blinn. Schaefer’s father, Robert A. Schaefer, taught accounting at the Blinn College-Brenham Campus for 15 years. Following in his father’s footsteps, Schaefer served as a Blinn faculty member for 23 years, eventually becoming division chair for Blinn’s Business, Information Technology, and Public Service Division (now the Division of Business and Mathematics). Schaefer’s daughters Allison and Amanda also attended Blinn and served as ambassadors for the College.

He currently serves on the Blinn College Foundation Board of Directors.

“The Schaefer’s longstanding commitment to Blinn has been invaluable and this scholarship reflects the family’s dedication to helping the next generation of students succeed,” said Blinn College Foundation Chair Nancy Berry. “We truly are grateful for their support and the impact this scholarship will make on students from Brazos County.”

The Blinn Foundation is a tax-exempt organization that provides financial support for programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn students and expand educational opportunities. It also looks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.

Endowed scholarships are available to incoming and returning students from a wide range of backgrounds, majors, and experiences. Students are considered based on high academic achievement, participation in student activities, and community involvement.

Students interested in the Michael and Sandra Schaefer Scholarship must be full-time students who attended a Brazos County high school and are the child of a Blinn College Brazos County employee.

Current high school and college students can apply for Blinn scholarships by completing the application at www.blinn.edu/scholarships. Prior to applying for scholarships, students must complete their application for admission to Blinn College at www.applytexas.org.
