Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drone) Technician
Blinn's Drone Technician Program is the only program of its type in the state, providing both technician and flight training. As you earn your Associate of Applied Science in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, you learn the concepts required to become a professional in the field, including electronics, mechanical design, and programming, and obtain specialized knowledge in unmanned aircraft systems, including flight, design, policy, and mission planning.
Interested in using drones for public safety and law enforcement?
Students interested in applying drone technology to criminal justice, law enforcement, and public safety may also be interested in Blinn's Criminal Justice Occupational Skills Award with Drone Specialization. This specialized credential combines foundational criminal justice coursework with drone flight training to prepare students for emerging public safety applications.
Degree and Certificate Plans
This 60-credit-hour degree prepares students for careers as drone technicians. Students can start with the 21-credit-hour Level-1 Certificate to gain entry-level experience while working toward their AAS.
Build Your Skills One Credential at a Time
Blinn College’s Drone Technology pathway is designed with stackable credentials that allow you to enter the workforce sooner while continuing to build toward an associate degree. Students can begin with the 21-credit-hour Level 1 Certificate, then apply those credit hours toward the 39-credit-hour Level 2 Certificate. From there, those credits can be applied toward the 60-credit-hour Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Drone Technology.
With each step, you build additional skills and earn a recognized college credential while continuing to make progress toward the next award. This flexible pathway can help you qualify for workforce opportunities more quickly while keeping your long-term educational goals within reach.

How do I choose which awards to pursue?
The 21-credit-hour Level-1 Certificate in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems provides an introduction to aerospace engineering, computer programming, flight theory, and aerodynamics.
The 39-credit-hour Level-2 Certificate in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems builds upon the Level-1 certificate with instruction in electromechanical, digital, and vision systems; microcomputer control; and engineering technology.
The 60-credit-hour Associate of Applied Science in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems prepares you for a career as a drone technician and may transfer toward select bachelor’s degree programs.

What jobs does this degree prepare me for?
Professionals trained in the maintenance and operation of sUAS are employed across a wide range of fields. Students can choose electives in a field of interest, including aerial photography, air and rescue, agriculture and forestry, construction, facilities and structure inspection, firefighting, law enforcement and disaster response, military and defense, oil and gas, and transport and delivery.

While select academic courses within the AAS degree plan may be applied toward bachelor's degrees, Blinn's certificates and AAS in Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems are not designed to transfer toward baccalaureate degree plans.
