Course begins March 22 at the A.W. Hodde Jr. Technical Education Center

March 2, 2022

The Blinn College District’s A.W. Hodde Jr. Technical Education Center is offering scholarship support for students who enroll in eligible career and technical education courses, including the Basic Construction Safety course running March 22 through May 5.

Available through Blinn’s Division of Technical and Community Education, the 64-hour course meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6-9 p.m., and includes an introduction to hand tools, power tools, construction math, construction drawings, and material handling. The course also covers basic communication and employability skills.

The course follows the National Center for Construction and Education Research (NCCER) curriculum, a nationally recognized curriculum developed by construction CEOs, trade association officials, and academic leaders. Upon completion, students earn their NCCER CORE, an industry-recognized credential that is a prerequisite for Level 1 certification in other skilled trades. Students also are taught to follow U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety regulations.

Scholarship funding is available with the support of a $100,000 grant from the Wayne Duddlesten Foundation. Scholarships are available for credit and non-credit programs. To be eligible, students must enroll in an Associate of Applied Science or workforce training program at Blinn, apply for the scholarship, and write a thank-you letter after the scholarship has been awarded. The Blinn College District's technical and community education programs have been designed in partnership with industry leaders to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to enter the workforce immediately upon completion. Some of these workforce education courses do not require a high school diploma and enrollment is fast, easy, and can be done remotely. Programs vary in length. Daytime, evening, and weekend options are available.
