Blinn offering June courses in certified nurse aide, pharmacy technician, refrigeration, truck driving, and welding in Bryan

Courses prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce

New Blinn College District course sections in certified nurse aide, refrigeration, pharmacy technician, truck driving, and welding are beginning this June in Bryan.

Blinn’s technical and community education courses are designed to provide students the knowledge and ability they need to enter the workforce immediately after completion of the courses. Many of these courses do not require a high school diploma and enrollment is fast and easy. As most of these courses are non-credit, students do not need to go through the College’s admissions process to enroll. Programs vary in length and are offered with daytime, evening, and weekend options.

CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE

NURA 1001: Nurse Aide for Health Care will run June 8 through July 21. The 80-hour course runs from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and is held at the Post Office Center at 301 Post Office Street in Bryan.

The course provides students the knowledge and skills to provide care for residents of long-term care facilities and covers topics such as resident rights, communication, safety, reporting, and assisting residents. The course emphasizes effective interaction with members of the healthcare team, restorative services, mental health, and social services needs.

Students who complete NURA 1001 and NURA 1060, a 40-hour clinical experience that allows students to apply their skills and concepts in a professional environment, are eligible to take the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services Exam, which certifies them for employment as a nurse aide in the State of Texas.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurse aides earn a median hourly wage of $14.25 per hour, and Texas ranks among the top states in the nation in terms of nursing assistant employment.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

PHRA 2071: Special Topics in Pharmacy Technician runs June 7 through Aug. 13. This course is offered online and provides an overview of the qualifications, operational guidelines, and job duties of a pharmacy technician.

Through the course, students learn the laws and ethics governing the pharmacy practice, key medical terms and abbreviations, and professional safety standards. Students who complete the three-course program are eligible to take the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.

REFRIGERATION PRINCIPLES

HART 1307: Refrigeration Principles runs Mondays through Fridays, June 7 through August 6, at the RELLIS Agriculture and Workforce Education Complex. The lecture portion of the course runs from 7:45-9:25 a.m., and the labs run from 9:45-11:25 a.m.

The course provides an introduction to the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer theory, temperature/pressure relationships, refrigerant handling, refrigeration components, and safety.

The course applies toward Blinn’s HVAC occupational skills award, Level 1 and 2 certificates, and associate of applied science degree. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, HVAC professional earn a median salary of $50,590 per year.

TRUCK DRIVING

CVOP 1013: Professional Truck Driver I runs from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, June 22 through July 9.

The 120-hour course provides an overview of the State of Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License written test, general truck driving skills with a hands-on component, and instruction coordinated with the Texas Department of Transportation. Students who complete the course along with CVOP 1040: Professional Truck Driver II, running July 12-28, are eligible to test for their commercial driver’s license.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, truck drivers earn a median pay of $47,130 per year.

WELDING

WLDG 2447: Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding and WLDG 2443: Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding will be offered Monday through Friday, June 7 through Aug. 6, at the RELLIS Agriculture and Workforce Education Complex.

The lecture portion of WLDG 2447 will take place from 7:45-10:05 a.m., followed by the lab portion from 10:15-11:25 a.m. The course covers advanced topics in gas metal arc welding and includes welding in various positions.

The lecture portion of WLDG 2443 will take place from 1:25-2:35 p.m., followed by the lab portion from 2:40-3:50 p.m. The course covers advanced topics based on accepted welding codes, and training is provided in shielded metal arc welding processes with open V-groove joints in various positions.

Both courses apply toward Blinn’s Level 1 and 2 welding certificates and its Associate of Applied Science Degree in Welding Technology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, welders earn a median salary of $44,190 per year.
