The Blinn College Smash Bros. Ultimate esports team lost its first match of the year Friday.
Blinn fell 2-0 to the University of Texas at Dallas. Its season record is now 1-1.
Members of the team are Scott McPherson (Forney, Texas), Culley Wright (Bryan), Justin Stanley (Cleburne, Texas), and Bishop Jackson (Conroe).
Coach Aaron Kapiko said he feels the team will use the loss as motivation for the rest of the season.
“There are things to work on, but they are still improving,” Kapiko said. “I believe they can come back better from that match this week.”
The team will take on Texas A&M University-San Antonio on Friday.
Blinn’s Overwatch esports team, 6-0 on the season, will take on league co-leader Southeastern University tonight and St. Andrews University on Thursday.
The Rocket League team, 5-1 on the season, plays Marian University and Shenandoah University on Tuesday. Blinn’s 2-0 Valorant team plays East Central University on Wednesday.
Blinn launched its esports program this fall, competing in the National Association of College Esports against two-year colleges and four-year universities.
