Blinn College Valorant esports team wins its season opener

Blinn dominates Wayland Baptist University in Wednesday match

October 8, 2020

Blinn College’s Valorant esports team opened its season Wednesday night with 2-0 win over Wayland Baptist University.

The Blinn team dominated both rounds, winning 13-2 and 13-3. Valorant is a tactical shooter game in which teams are either attackers or defenders. An attacking team wins if it eliminates the entire enemy team or is able to detonate a spike placed on an objective. The defending team wins if it can prevent the spike from being detonated or eliminates the attacking team.

Team members are Jacob Humphrey (Smithville), Justin Barry (Houston), Irie Ybarra (College Station), Cameron Forde (Copperas Cove), John Hedrick (Kingwood), and Michael Pope (College Station).

Esports Coach Aaron Kapiko said Barry had the most eliminations in each match.

Blinn’s Overwatch team plays tonight against Florida Southern College. Its Smash Brothers Ultimate team begins its season Friday against Keiser University-Pembrook Pines.

Blinn, which began its esports program this fall, competes in the National Association of College Esports (NACE) league play against two-year colleges and four-year universities. It is one of only a few community colleges in the region which offers esports scholarships.
