Blinn College Overwatch team remains unbeaten

Team moves to 4-0 with win over Florida Southern College on Thursday

October 9, 2020

The Blinn College esports Overwatch team moved to 4-0 on the season with a 3-2 win over Florida Southern College on Thursday.

The match was the closest the Buccaneers have faced this season.

“It went down to the final point of the last map,” coach Aaron Kapiko said.

In Overwatch, teams defend or attack points on a map, or escort a payload across a map while another team tries to stop them. Players select a “hero,” but that player can change during the course of a match.

Team members are Jacob Barnes (Bryan), Juan Cantu (Cedar Hill), Carter Haber (Aledo), Andrew Magourik (Bryan), Ayden Rodriguez (College Station), and Caleb Sheffield (Austin).

Kapiko said Cantu was Blinn’s top player against Florida Southern.

“His play on several different heroes was pivotal in securing the match,” he said.

Blinn is a member of the National Association of College Esports, competing against two-year colleges and four-year universities.

Its Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team opens its season tonight against Wayland Baptist University. Blinn’s Overwatch team plays Keiser University-Pembroke Pines on Monday and the Rocket League team plays tonight against the University of Southern Mississippi and Tuesday against the University of Missouri and Southwest Minnesota State University.
