The Blinn College Health and Kinesiology Department invites students, faculty, and staff to participate in a 10-Mile Virtual Challenge.
The challenge is part of the department’s National Physical Fitness and Sports Month activities. The President’s Council of Physical Fitness has designated May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, part of an initiative to promote healthy lifestyles, said Dr. Shelly Peacock, Head of the Health and Kinesiology Department.
“We want to have fun while we stress the importance of staying active,” said Peacock. “The benefits include reduction of stress, improvement of energy levels and moods, maintenance of strong bones and joints, and prevention of diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.”
Rules of the challenge are:
- Participants will have seven days to complete at least 10 miles (May 4-10).
- It must be a workout session and not daily steps.
- There must be at least three workouts with a minimum of 24 hours between each.
“We will use the MapMyWalk app and there will be a leaderboard so participants can monitor their progress on the app,” Peacock said.
The app is available at www.mapmywalk.com/app. After a participant has downloaded MapMyWalk, they can register at https://forms.gle/FeRVbgT8Abbb6wSRA.
Peacock, who is the contact person for the event (shelly.peacock@blinn.edu), encouraged Blinn faculty, staff, students, and their family to sign up.
“Staying active is even more important now,” she said. “It’s one of the best ways to keep our bodies healthy. You don’t have to make big lifestyle changes to see the benefits, and we hope the Virtual Challenge will provide encouragement in a fun way.”
Throughout the month of May, the Health and Kinesiology Department will launch “31 Days of Activity and Sports” on its Twitter account (@BlinnKines), which will feature daily fun facts and information about physical activity.
