Blinn quarterback commits to Kansas State
Following in a long line of quarterbacks to go on to prominent Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs, Blinn College quarterback Justin Tuggle committed to Kansas State University this past weekend after an official campus visit. Tuggle, a 6-foot-3, 230 pound sophomore transfer from Boston College, has led the seventh-ranked Buccaneers to a 3-1 start this season and is considered one of the top junior college recruits in the country.
Tuggle, the son of former Atlanta Falcons all-pro linebacker Jessie "The Hammer"Tuggle, has completed 44 of 85 passes for 667 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing 38 times for 222 yards and six more scores in four games this season. Scheduled to graduated from Blinn in the fall, Tuggle will begin spring semester classes at Kansas State in January.
"I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to play for Coach (Bill) Snyder, who has helped develop so many great players at Kansas State,” said Tuggle. "Their offensive system is a good fit for me, and the coaches talked about the opportunity for me to play and have an immediate impact."
Tuggle marks the third consecutive quarterback to move on to a Division I FBS program under head coach Brad Franchione. Terrance Cain, who was a two year starter from 2007-2008, was named the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and is now quarterback for the Utah Utes. After leading the Bucs to their fourth national championship in 2009, Cameron Newton is now directing the offense for the Auburn Tigers in the SEC. Just this past weekend, Newton was named the Davey O’Brien quarterback of the week and the SEC Player of the Week, after rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns and completing 16-of-21 passes for 158 yards and two more scores.
Franchione understands and embraces his role in helping guide these young men in the right direction not only in football, but also in life.
"I'm extremely happy for Justin. He is another example of a young man who wanted a second chance and I’m glad we could help him out,"Franchione said. “Now he can focus on his academic work and his improvement on the football field.”
Comparisons have already been made between Tuggle and Michael Bishop, another Blinn quarterback who led Kansas State to the verge of a national title in 1998, after leading the Buccaneers to consecutive NJCAA championships in 1995-1996.
"I have heard the comparisons between the two of us, and I just hope that I can help bring that kind of success to K-State," Tuggle said. "For right now, my only focus is on the task at hand this weekend's match-up against Navarro.
