Why is writing so important?

In a survey conducted by The National Commission on Writing, employers overwhelmingly agreed that "People's writing skills are not where they need to be," and that college graduates do not have the necessary writing skills to get hired - or get ahead. Employers spend more than $3.1 billion dollars to improve workers' writing skills. They send employees to seminars and classes, hire teachers, etc.

Writing skills are essential in almost every profession!
Engineering Healthcare Science
Agriculture Real Estate Education
Finance

Approximately 2 million people graduate with college degrees every year. That's a lot of competition for jobs!

I can understand taking composition, but why do I have to take a literature course?

Literature courses continue to challenge your writing abilities. They are designed to teach critical thinking (looking beyond the surface), analysis (figuring out how the parts affect the whole), organization, argument, and research. All of these skills are essential in today's working environment. So the next time you are looking for the theme of a short story, think about the big picture - you are learning skills for your future!
