Medication Aide Training for Nurse Aides and Other Direct Care Staff
Employed in Long-Term or Personal Care Facilities, Correctional Settings
or State Schools
Certification
Upon sucessful completion of the program, students may be eligible
to take the Texas Certified Medication Aide Registry exam.
The training program includes all
of the requirements established by the Department of Aging and Disablity
Services:
The objective of this 140 contact hour course is to prepare Nurse Aides
for the administration of medicines under supervison as outlined by the
Department of Aging and Disability Services. The training covers the following
topics:
- Procedures for preparation and administration of medications
- Responsibility, control, accountability, storage and safeguarding
of medication
- Use of reference material
- Documentation of medications in residents' clinical records
- Lines of authority in the facility
- Responsibilities and liabilities associated with the administration
and safeguarding of medication
- Allowable and prohibited practices of permit holders
- Drug reactions and side effects of medications commonly administered
to facility residents
- Rules covering the Medication Aide Training Program
- Content of class: 100 hours Classroom, 30 hours Lab Activity, 10 hours
Clinical
- The clinical training will be held at the student's place of employment
and will be supervised by a qualified nurse or facility administrator.

Course Requirements
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Present Certified or Notarized copy of a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Be able to perform basic calculations
- Be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities required
by the profession
- Be free of communicable diseases
- Achieve a passing score on all class exams and maintain a 70% grade
average
- Achieve required competencies during all clinicals
- Complete all coursework and attend a minimum of 90% of the scheduled
class hours
- Be on time for all classes
- Actively participate in all clinical activities
- Be currently employed in a facility as a *Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)
or as a **non-licensed direct care staff person on the first official
day of the training program, and be listed in good standing on the Nurse
Aide Registry
*Certified Nurse Aides employed in a Medicare or Medicaid nursing facility
are exempt from the 90 days of employment requirement, but must be employed
in a facility on the course start date.
**Non-Licensed Direct Care Staff employed in a facility must have 90 days
of employment prior to course start date
