Choir Contest Rules:

  • You will have a thirty minute slot for warm-up, rehearsal, and performance. Warm-up and rehearsal will take place in the same location as the performance; your judges will be instructed to only judge the performance.
  • Please plan on arriving slightly early, in case of a cancellation.
  • Make sure you bring three copies of your scores with measures numbered.
  • First and second division ratings will receive plaques. All contestants will receive written comments and a CD recording of their performance. Also, an outstanding group award will be presented to each entrance category.
  • Groups may perform as many pieces as can be fit into the 30 minute time limit, though three is the suggested amount.
  • There are no restrictions on music; it may come from any source, regardless of PML listing.
  • Directors may alter voicing, so long as that voicing is noted in the score. A piano is provided, though there are no restrictions or requirements on using it or performing a capella music.
  • Choirs will be judged on tone, technique, stage presence, and interpretation.
  • Choirs may remain to hear other groups, but must remain inside/outside the doors unless instructed by an usher. In order to maintain a competitive fairness for each group, once the warm-up period is ended, no one is allowed to enter or exit the performance space for any reason until the performance is finished.
  • There is no sight-reading component.
