Admission Criteria

Selection is based on the following criteria:

  • a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • your HOBET scores
  • your completed general education courses
  • an interview
  • a general category including degree completion, recommendations, dental and non dental related work/volunteer experience

In addition, the following courses must have been completed within 3 -5 years of application:

  • BIOL 2401 - Anatomy and Physiology I ( within 5 years)
  • BIOL 2402 - Anatomy and Physiology II (within 5 years)
  • BIOL 2421 - Microbiology (within 3 years)

The attainment of a higher G.P.A. and the completion of a larger number of general education and science courses will result in a more competitive applicant for the 12 available dental hygiene program participant seats. The top 30 students will be selected for an interview with the selection committee.

HOBET Exam -

Your average composite percentage score must be 56 or above.

Recommendation Forms -

Three (3) completed recommendation forms must be received in the completed dental hygiene application packet. Recommendations will be accepted from dentists, dental hygienists, employers, members of the clergy, teachers, civic leaders, or individuals unrelated to you that are familiar with your qualifications for the dental hygiene profession. Letters must be received in sealed envelopes and submitted with your complete packet. Recommendation forms will be provided in your application packet.

Observation -

Observation of a registered dental hygienist is a requirement for your program application. This experience will help you see on a first hand-hand basis, the day-to-day functions of a dental hygienist and will afford you the opportunity to see how a dental hygienist's position relates to the function of the total dental care profession. You must observe a minimum of 16 hours. Please have the hygienist(s) document your observation time on the observation log. Dental assistants must observe, as well. Simply working as a dental assistant will not substitute for direct observation, unless you are a dental hygiene assistant. Observation must occur between the following dates: February 1, 2006 - January 21, 2007. No exceptions.
