The criminal justice degree and certificate courses listed as CRIJ are academic transfer courses which will transfer to universities that offer a criminal justice bachelor's degree. Check with the University of your Choice and refer to their equivalency guide.
In addition to the program's transferability, students may articulate their criminal justice course work from many high schools and from the TEEX police academy. Students are encouraged to take an internship class in order to receive experience and training.
The program has established internships with Brazos Valley law enforcement agencies including the Department of Public Safety, and other related agencies such as the abused family shelter, county attorney's office, and the juvenile justice facilities. The latest information from the field is offered in our Special Topics and upcoming Contemporary Issues courses.
Currently, the "Alert" police car project featuring the computerization of police equipment is offered as a Special Topic technology course. Future plans for the program include: off campus or teleconferencing courses to serve the outlining rural areas and internet criminal justice courses to serve students that need a non-traditional schedule.
Completing criminal justice course work may make you more marketable for positions that do not require a four-year college degree. Some criminal justice agencies require coursework to apply or to be promoted. Examples include the requirement of 60 college credit hours to apply at the Department of Public Safety and the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission to be a trooper/agent respectively. Some local agencies such as the Texas A&M Police Department require 45 hours.
The Texas Youth Commission (TYC) requires 2 years experience as a juvenile correction officer and 30 hours to be promoted to a case manager. TYC also offers a tuition incentive program after 3 years employment.
