Child Development Program

The Blinn College Child Development Program offers many classes applicable to the child care profession. We have classes in the late afternoon and evening to meet the needs of non-traditional students and those students who work full-time (Bryan campus). The program offers a Child Care Worker Certificate (27 hours of coursework) in Bryan and Brenham and an Associate of Applied Science degree (69-70 hours of coursework) on the Bryan campus. The Associate in Applied Science degree in child development includes additional child development classes, academic courses in humanities, business/English, math, and electives. Blinn College child development classes can help a student meet the training requirements for the Child Development Associate (CDA) as well as licensing requirements for the position of director in a licensed child care facility.

Child Development Program graduates with a certificate are qualified to enter positions as child care workers or teaching assistants in preschool programs or other child care facilities. Graduates with an AAS degree are qualified to enter positions such as teacher/lead teacher in a child care facility or preschool program, child care center owner/director, HeadStart teacher, owner/director of a group day home or registered home, child life assistant or teacher’s aide in the public schools. Students pursuing the child care worker certificate and the Associates in Applied Science degree are required to complete a capstone experience in a licensed child care facility or home daycare that meets or exceeds the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Service’s licensing criteria. Students will be required to pass a background check conducted by the facility and TDPRS.

Four child development courses, TECA 1303, TECA 1311, TECA 1318 and TECA 1354 are designated academic transfer courses and may be accepted by four year institutions offering a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree for Elementary Certification: Early Childhood through 4th grade or other relevant degree. These courses will satisfy lower division requirements for this degree. Please contact Amy Jones for further information concerning transferability of these courses.

The Blinn College Child Development Program also offers courses that meet the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services educational criteria for those interested in becoming directors of licensed child care facilities. These classes can be taken individually or as part of an additional certificate to meet licensing requirements. These classes include: CDEC 2326 Administration of Programs for Children I and CDEC 2328 Administration of Programs for Children II. Students interested in these classes must have experience in child care and the approval of the child development program coordinator before pursuing the certificate.
