Medical Education Development Society

By-Laws

 

Article I

Section l. The name of this organization shall be The Blinn College MEDS Club--Medical Education Development Society.

Section 2. The membership of this organization is open to all Blinn College students who are primarily interested in pursuing careers in the health fields and in veterinary medicine. All Blinn College students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend the meetings.

Article II

Section 1. The objectives of this organization shall be to:

A. be of service to the Blinn College campus and to the local community of Brenham and Washington County

B. promote fellowship and high standards of scholarship among the students, and

c. promote a better understanding of medical and health careers among the members.

Article III

Section 1. The active membership shall consist of at least seven Blinn College students.

Section 2. Active members shall pay dues of five dollars per semester or ten dollars per year.

Article IV

Section 1. Officers of this club shall consist of a president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, and a reporter. These officers will comprise the Executive Committee of the organization.

Section 2. No student on scholastic or disciplinary probation shall serve as an officer of the organization. All officers must be Blinn College students in good standing and must be attending classes regularly.

Section 3. The duties of the officers shall be:

A. The president shall preside over meetings of the organization, shall serve as an ex officio and a voting member of all standing committees and shall chair the program committee.

B. The vice president shall preside over meetings in the absence of the president and shall assist the president as needed, particularly in contacting guest speakers. This officer will also help coordinate any fundraisers by the club.

C. The secretary-treasurer shall keep the record of membership including email addresses, submit a report form for each meeting to the Student Activities Director, and collect dues to be submitted to the faculty sponsors. This officer will make a report on the financial condition of the organization at each meeting. This officer shall send a thank you note to each guest speaker. Club stationery should be used.

D. The reporter shall record and report any newsworthy activities to the appropriate media. This includes taking photos of the officers and all activities and submitting them to the faculty sponsors for the MEDS Club scrapbook. The photos or disposable camera must be turned in to the faculty sponsors at or before the last meeting of the spring semester.

Article V

Section 1. Officers will be elected by a simple majority vote of candidates nominated by the members or the sponsors. Officers will seve no more than two terms (four semesters).

Section 2. An officer who fails to fulfill the duties of the office may be removed from office by a simple majority vote of the Executive Committee.

Section 3. One or more members of the Blinn College faculty or staff shall serve as sponsors of the organization. All financial transactions must be approved in advance by the sponsors. One or more sponsors should be present at all meetings of the organization. The sponsor(s) will assure that all administrative policies of the College are observed by the organization.

Article VI

Section 1. Regular meetings will be held twice each month during the spring and fall semesters and will include a short program usually by a guest speaker. The schedule is to be determined by a vote of the members. Additional meetings may be held as needed. The Club is normally inactive during the summer months.

Article VII

Section 1. The meetings will consist of informal presentations by the guest speakers. Meetings will be informal and will include comments by the sponsor(s), the Club president, and the committee chairs. Roberts' Rules of Order shall be observed at meetings only as needed. The sponsor(s) with input from the Executive Committee will determine matters of procedure.

Article VIII

Section 1. Ratification of any amendment to these By-Laws must be done by a two-thirds majority of the active membership.

Section 2. Any and all amendments to these By-Laws are subject to the approval of the Administration and the Board of Trustees of Blinn College.

Section 3. There shall be no voting by proxy. Those members with an interest in a health-related career should vote on Club business.

Article IX

Section 1. These By-Laws shall be adopted upon an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the active members of the organization.
