The study of mathematics as a subject in its own right begin in the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans, who coined the term "mathematics" from the ancient Greek (mathema), meaning "subject of instruction". At Blinn College the study of mathematics began with our founding in 1883.
Why study or major in mathematics? Because mathematics opens the doors to many promising career paths. Math majors develop analytical proficiencies, knowledge of math theory and practical applications, and problem-solving skills that are highly valued by public and private companies in every industry, including finance, computer and data science, and biotechnology.
