COMMUNICATIONS
Your Attitude Is the Difference – Blending humor
and literature can inspire the audience to live life with a positive attitude.
What we do with the 24 hours in each day helps make us who we are, but
just as significant is the attitude we have for the journey. Tom Sawyer
could have grumbled and complained “It’s not fair” or
refuse to obey and not whitewash the fence, but instead he proclaimed
it to be fun and others paid him to allow them to experience his enthusiasm.
Length: 20 minutes
Medium: ___
Speaker: H. F. Poehlmann,
English Instructor

IDEA: The Way We Teach - Regardless of an individual’s
chosen career, we are all teachers, therefore, it is helpful to understand
how to impart the concept we are endeavoring to communicate. IDEA stands
for the steps teachers use to teach. The “I” is for introducing
the concept. The “D” is for defining the concept. The “E”
is for showing an example of the concept. The “A” is the assignment
given that helps the learner apply the concept.

Revising Writing - Revision is more than reading the
paper repeatedly to detect errors. The five revision concepts discussed
are intended to help the writer revise for mechanical and grammatical
errors as opposed to content problems. The revision concepts are the five
basic sentence patterns (which helps the reader focus on syntax rather
than just reread), the four basic comma rules (which will eliminate 90
to 100 percent of all comma problems), verbals (which help create a more
vivid picture for the reader), parallelism (which focuses on the grammatical
construction of the sentence), and active voice (which helps the reader
to visualize the message).

CULTURE
Radiographic Analysis: Peruvian Mummies/Artifacts -
In 2002, Blinn’s radiologic technology program director M. Elia
Flores was appointed to lead a team of 10 scientists to Ilo, Peru, where
radiolography was used to unearth the mysteries of an ancient civilization.
Radiologic technologists can play a vital role in assisting experts with
mummies, pottery, basketry and textile. This presentation is primarily
focused on answering the question whether conventional radiography can
provide a greater insight into the weaving practice or processes of the
pre-Hispanic culture.

Radiologic Technology Program Director

Radiography as an Investigative Tool – This presentation
delves into the role of the Radiologic Technologist in bioanthropology
both in the field and in research. Though we think of x-rays and mammograms
in a more traditional sense, scientists use these effective medical tools
to learn about extinct civilizations. For example, they may use radiography
to examine the techniques used by ancient cultures in crafting their pottery
and textile. They can also determine the authenticity of artifacts to
deter fraud.

Uncovering the Texas Mystique - Union General Philip
Henry Sheridan once remarked, “If I owned Texas and Hell, I would
rent out Texas and live in Hell.” While some may find this arrangement
favorable, Blinn English instructor Audrey A. Herbrich feels otherwise.
Texas is an area unlike any other, with a people and a culture unique
in their own rite. In an attempt to embrace all that is “Texas,”
Herbrich’s presentations discuss Texas myths, peculiarities, culture
and history. This lighthearted look at some of what distinguishes Texas
as such allows audiences to kick back and may make them think differently
about their own Texas connections.

Weed or Feed? Edible Texas Plants –We know pecans are great in pies and other desserts, but what about acorns and mesquite beans? Lots of plants native to our state are edible. Blackberries, grapes and persimmons grow wild here. Dandelion and chickweed may be weeds, but their leaves make a pretty good salad if picked at the right time. Blinn biology instructor Punnee Soonthornpoct talks about trees, weeds and other native Texas plants that can go on our dinner table. This topic can be presented as an overview or as separate presentations by plant type.

From Junction Boy to Fundraiser – Marvin Tate
credits his time under Coach Bear Bryant as one of the most character
building experiences of his life. His senior year coincided with Bryant’s
arrival as the anointed savior of the football program. That year, Bryant
started out with 111 anxious Aggies going to training camp in Junction.
The Bear’s tyrannical style mixed with the harsh, hot environment
of West Texas took a heavy toll. By the time the team bus pulled back
into campus, only 35 players remained. Tate was among them. In 2003, Tate
and his fellow seniors on that squad were honored with the Bill Wade Unsung
Heroes Award and ESPN produced “The Junction Boys” movie.
From being a leader on the field to head of the athletic department and
then mayor of Bryan, Tate became well known in Aggieland. Now he serves
as one of Blinn College’s primary fundraisers establishing scholarships
and collecting donations so the college can continue its record of excellence
in education.
