Verify Your TSI Status

Under the Texas Success Initiative (Senate Bill 286), students will be assessed, receive the help they need to become college ready, and be evaluated to determine when they are ready to enroll in college-level work.

TSI Exempt

You are TSI Exempt (not required to take the state-approved assessment) if any one of the following conditions applies. Official documentation must be provided to Blinn College.

  1. ACT Composite score of 23 with minimum scores of 19 on both the English and mathematics sections
  2. SAT Combined score of at least 1070 with minimum scores of 500 on both the verbal and mathematics sections
  • Scores cannot be more than 5 years old
  • Scores must be from the same test date
  1. Graduated with an Associate or Baccalaureate degree from an accredited Texas public institution of higher education
  1. Transferred from a private or independent institution of higher education and have gained credit ("C" or higher) in each of the 3 skill areas (reading, writing, mathematics) will be considered "college ready"
  2. Previously attended another institution of higher education and have been determined by that institution to have met college-readiness
  3. Enrolling in a certificate program of 42 hours or less (Blinn College requires certificate students to be assessed using the THEA Test or one the of the state-approved assessment tests)
  4. Served on active duty as a member of the U.S. armed forces, Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the U.S. armed forces and has been serving at least three years preceding enrollment (a copy of military ID card must be submitted)
  5. Honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty, Texas National Guard, or military reserves on or after August 1, 1990

NOTE: New students who are TSI Exempt or who have passed all parts of the THEA Test (or other state-approved assessment test) may waive the academic advising requirement by completing and submitting a Self-Advising Waiver Form to the Admissions Office. Even though this option is available, we strongly urge new students to meet with an advisor/counselor for course selection.

You are considered “College-Ready” and have met TSI requirements in reading, mathematics, and writing, if you have achieved passing scores on any of the assessment tests listed below.

NOTE: You can achieve the minimum standard passing score of 230 in mathematics but still be required to enroll in a developmental math course. Blinn College requires a standard score of 270 or higher to enroll in college algebra.

 

Partial Exemption Scores

For those students who have taken the ACT or SAT Test, a partial exemption may be granted if a student meets the composite score requirement, but does not meet both of the individual exemption score requirements:

  1. ACT Test: If a student has a minimum composite score of 23 and has a score of at least 19 on either the verbal or the mathematics test but no both, the student will be considered exempt on the section in which a 19 was scored.*
  2. SAT Test: If a student has a minimum composite score of 1070 and has a score fo at least 500 on either the verbal or the mathematics test but not both, the student will be considered exempt on the section in which a 500 or higher was scored.*
  3. TAKS Test: Partial exemptions are allowed for students meeting the minimum score in any one of the areas.

*NOTE: Before a Partial Exemption will be granted, a state test must be taken and official scores sent to the Admissions Office.

 

TSI Not Passed

  • Required to take developmental courses until TSI completed
  • Restricted from certain courses until college level skills are obtained in reading, writing, and math
  • Initial test scores will be used for placement into developmental courses
  • Must be advised each semester until TSI completed
  • Must complete developmental sequence or pass that section of the test previously failed before enrolling in related college-level courses

Developmental Education Courses

  • Strengthen weaker skill areas: reading, writing or math
  • Fulfill TSI requirements
  • Refresh skills before going on to more difficult courses
  • Incorporate regular assistance or occasional tutoring with college-level or developmental courses
