How To Read A Class Schedule
The Keys to Planning and Selecting Classes
- It is always a good idea to start with a light
load (12 - 14 hours). If you do well, increase your course
load.
- Balance your time - For every hour of class time,
plan on spending 2 hours of study time (based on a 16-week
semester).
EXAMPLE: ENGL 1301
3 hours Class time + 6 hours Study time = 9
hours total per week
| Working Hours |
Recommended Course Load |
| 40 |
3 - 6 credit hours |
| 20 |
6 - 12 credit hours |

12 - 18 credit hours |

- New students are encouraged to enroll in a College
Success Class:
- Strategies for College Success (STDY 0311)
Learning Frameworks (EDUC 1300)
- Enroll and complete developmental courses as soon
as possible.
Build Your Schedule
- Use the printed course schedule or website to find the
classes listed/recommended on your advising sheet
- Choose
courses only listed under the campus you will be attending.
If you want to enroll in courses from more than
one campus, contact the Enrollment Services Office.
- List the course
name and #, section #, campus, day and time of the
classes you wish to take. Determine secondary choices in
case primary class choices are unavailable.
- Choose a variety of courses that fit your academic
goals, major, or transfer requirements.
• Include developmental courses, if required
• Follow prerequisite requirements
• Identify as many course selections as possible
• Use the Transfer
Equivalency Guide or Texas Common Course
Numbering System (TCCNS) to determine
transfer
course needs
- Once you’ve selected a specific day and
time, locate the 4-digit CID # (course identification
number)
or Call
Number and write that number in the appropriate space
on the advising
form.
Example:
| Course ID# |
