The Pack Unit was established in September 1983.  The institution has approximately 1,440 offenders and contains 7,003 acres that are co-located with the Luther Unit.  These units work in cooperation to operate agricultural programs that include: Cow/Calf Operations, Edible and Field Crops, Farm Shop, Security Horses/Dogs, Swine Finishing Operation, Texas Fresh Approach Food Bank Program, and Buffalo Ranch.  Pack Unit’s manufacturing operation includes a surplus warehouse.  Educational services, in addition to Blinn College, include: Literacy, CHANGES/Pre-Release, Special Education, Cognitive Intervention, Project RIO, Career and Technology Programs:  Construction Carpentry, and Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning & Refrigeration. Community work projects include services provided to city and county agencies and local organizations, Habitat for Humanity, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Texas Department of Transportation.
