Blinn Board of Trustees adopts emergency resolution designed to streamline campus repairs

Freezing temperatures resulted in water damage to facilities in Brenham and Bryan

February 24, 2021

The Blinn College District Board of Trustees adopted a resolution declaring an emergency related to last week’s winter storm during a special meeting called Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The emergency declaration provides the College the ability to streamline the repair process by expanding authority to Dr. Mary Hensley, Chancellor of the Blinn College District, to contract for the replacement, construction, or repair of College District facilities and equipment damaged in the recent winter storm. The emergency declaration also allows the College to use an expedited procurement process to allow operations to resume at the impacted facilities as quickly as possible.

Among other facilities damaged by the storm on the Brenham Campus, the Old Main Building and Wheeler Hall suffered water damage as a result of the fire suppression systems freezing.

On the Bryan Campus, Building D suffered water damage due to a frozen fire suppression system. In Building G, a frozen coil in an air-handling unit resulted in water damage. The occupants and activities in each of these locations are being relocated to other buildings on campus until repairs can be completed.

Blinn’s RELLIS, Schulenburg, and Sealy Campus facilities suffered no major damage.

The College anticipates that much of the damage related to the recent winter storm will be covered by its property insurance.
