Blinn College esports teams go 2-0 in Friday matches

Rocket League defeats Southern Mississippi University, Super Smash Bros. team wins season opener

Blinn College esports teams went undefeated in two matches Friday.

Its Rocket League team took a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Mississippi, moving to 3-1 on the season.

The Super Smash Bros. team made its season debut, winning 2-1 in a match against Wayland Baptist University.

Rocket League team members are Zach Matthews (Conroe), Jake Sansom (Friendswood), Jack Barry (Houston), and Kyle Jones (Gilmer).

Members of the Super Smash Brothers team are Scott McPherson (Forney, Texas), Culley Wright (Bryan), Justin Stanley (Cleburne, Texas), and Bishop Jackson (Conroe).

Esports coach Aaron Kapiko said both teams played very well.

Blinn’s Overwatch team, which is 4-0 on the season, plays tonight against Keiser University-Pembroke Pines. The Rocket League team has matches scheduled Tuesday against the University of Missouri and Southwest Minnesota State University. Blinn’s Valorant team plays Wednesday against East Central University.

Blinn is one of only a few community colleges in the region offering esports scholarships, and competes in the National Association of College Esports against two-year colleges and four-year universities.
