Blinn Board of Trustees approves $115.3 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year

Budget reflects Blinn’s expansion to the Walter C. Schwartz Building at the RELLIS Campus

June 19, 2018

The Blinn College District Board of Trustees approved a $115.3 million budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19 and approved a lease agreement with The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents during its regular meeting Tuesday.

The FY 2018-19 budget represents a 2.4 percent increase over the previous year, and includes a 3 percent salary increase for full-time faculty and staff.

This year’s budget reflects Blinn’s expansion to include operations at The Texas A&M System’s RELLIS Campus. Opening in the Fall semester, the 83,000-square-foot Walter C. Schwartz Building features 19 classrooms and eight laboratories, and will allow students to learn cutting-edge, high-demand skills in an environment that encourages collaboration between public institutions and private companies.

Each program at the RELLIS Academic Alliance creates a seamless pathway for students to earn a bachelor’s degree in related fields from an A&M System University, including Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Prairie View A&M University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University-International, West Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University-Texarkana, Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Texas A&M University-Central Texas. The lease agreement approved Tuesday will allow Blinn to utilize Building 7901 at the RELLIS Campus for skilled trades training programs in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, facilities maintenance technician, and the classroom portion of the commercial driver’s license truck driver training.

Last week, Blinn and the Brazos Valley Economic Development Corporation were awarded the Texas Economic Development Council 2018 Workforce Excellence Award in recognition of their response to the Brazos Valley’s growing demand for construction workers to support the region’s historic growth.

Blinn partnered with the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, The Texas A&M System, and the Texas Workforce Commission to establish pre-apprenticeship training programs at the RELLIS Campus. Each program was designed following the nationally recognized National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum, which was developed with the cooperation of more than 125 construction CEOs, trade association officials, and academic leaders. More information regarding those courses is available at www.blinn.edu/workforce or by calling 979-209-7205.

In other business, the board approved a memorandum of agreement with the City of Brenham to use Rankin Field at Hohlt Park for men’s and women’s soccer games. In March, the board approved the launch of men’s and women’s soccer teams in time for the Fall 2018 season. Last month, Blinn announced that Jorden Smith would serve as head coach for both programs.
