Blinn-Brenham Phi Theta Kappa to host Mental Health Awareness Day Wednesday

Event will raise mental health awareness with resources and guest speakers

November 6, 2018

The Blinn College-Brenham Campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will provide mental health resources and guest speakers Wednesday, Nov. 7, when it hosts Mental Health Awareness Day from 6-8 p.m. in the Brenham Campus Student Center. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

“Phi Theta Kappa is glad to host this event because as an honor society we are dedicated to bringing about college projects that bring attention to important issues on campus,” said Sam Miller, Phi Theta Kappa Vice President for Leadership. “One very important topic is in relation to mental health, and we want to push Blinn College students to seek help when they need it. We want students to know that Blinn College cares.”

Guest speakers include Alexis Brooks, a licensed professional counselor for Blinn College; Izzy, a student in the LGBTQ community; Christie Taylor, a clinical manager from an intensive outpatient treatment center; and Donald Schroeder, executive regional director for the drug addiction treatment center Texas Symetria Recovery.

Brooks will speak about mental health and stress, the resources available through Blinn College and provide encouragement for students to use the resources. Izzy will speak on topics related to the mental health problem facing the LGBTQ community. Taylor will talk about coping skills and suicide prevention, while Schroeder will discuss recovery and seeking help in relation to substance abuse.

Resources and information will be available from Blinn College Counseling Services, Rock Prairie Behavioral Health, LGBTQ, and Symetria Recovery. In addition, there will be interactive activities from the Housing Department that will involve information related to binge drinking and other important topics.

“Several members of the Blinn College Housing and Counseling offices wanted to be involved in this project and the Office of Student Leadership and Activities played a major role in planning for the event to be successful,” Miller said. “We also have the support of several student organizations such as the Refined Ladies, Distinguished Gentlemen, and Multicultural Student Association. We want to make a collective effort to get people involved in something that matters.”
