The Blinn College Alumni and Friends Association recently awarded eight grants totaling $39,755.20 to support educational programming and activities at the Blinn College District.
“The Alumni and Friends Association provides endowed scholarships and mini-grants to teachers and programs who have a need and request the donation from us,” said Dr. Deanna Alfred, Blinn College Alumni and Friends Association President. “Our main source of funding is the Clay Shoot each spring. It is a tremendous success and the money raised allows us to enhance programs and offer scholarships.”
The Blinn College Yoga Club was awarded a $755.20 grant that will be used to purchase a membership to online yoga instruction and basic yoga supplies such as mats, straps, and blocks.
The Blinn College Choral Department, Blinn College Residence Hall Association, Blinn College Ag Club, and Blinn College Nursing Student Association each received grants for the amount of $1,000.
The Ag Club will use the donation to assist with this year’s Blinn College Agriculture Mechanics Show. In 2018, the event drew 173 entries from 80 schools around the state.
The Blinn College Nursing Student Association will use the grant to support two organizations, the Brazos Valley Salvation Army Food Pantry and Brazos Valley Mosaic HUGS Program-Hygiene Pantry for the Fall and Spring.
A $5,000 donation was awarded to the Blinn College Foundation in memory of longtime Blinn professor and Board of Trustees member Charles Heller to establish the Charles Heller Memorial Endowment Scholarship.
Two $15,000 grants were awarded to the Blinn Foundation for endowed scholarships to be used at any of the five Blinn College District campuses.
The Blinn College Alumni and Friends Association’s biggest fundraiser, the fifth annual Clay Shootout, is set for Friday, April 5, 2019. The event is hosted by the Alumni and Friends Association and Buccaneer Alumni Lettermen Association. The 2018 Clay Shootout raised over $60,000 to support Blinn students.
“The Clay Shootout is a great way to have fun, plus have a positive impact on our local college and community,” Alfred said.
The Blinn Alumni and Friends Association maintains contact with former students, encourages support for and participation in the College’s educational, cultural, athletic, and social programs, encourages student recruitment, and assists the College in achieving its goals and objectives.
