A Blinn College District professor has been recognized by her alma mater for her professional excellence and dedication to community service.

Longview Independent School District (ISD) named Education Professor Essie Childers one of its 2018 Distinguished Alumni during a recent ceremony in Longview. The event included a commemorative brick presentation near the entrance of the school district’s football stadium.

Honorees are nominated at-large and voted upon by a selection committee. A 1971 graduate of Longview High School, Childers was nominated by a former classmate who emphasized her longtime commitment to Longview ISD programs and for demonstrating excellence in her professional career.

“I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that I was chosen as one of three Distinguished Alumni for Longview ISD,” Childers said. “It was such a delight to return to my alma mater to speak with current students about the importance of taking personal responsibility to be successful in high school, college, and the workforce.”

An educator of 31 years, Childers is a graduate of Abilene Christian University and the University of Texas at Tyler. She is the immediate past president of the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA), the largest organization of postsecondary educators in Texas, and was named the 2017 Carol Dochen Developmental Educator of the Year. Childers also is the winner of the 2014 College Reading and Learning Association’s Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2014 Blinn Professional Association Outstanding Service Award, and the 2013 On Course Ambassador of the Year Award.

Childers serves on Blinn’s Quality Enhancement Plan Development Team and was one of the first graduates of the College’s FutureWorks Academy.

“I come from a very humble beginning, and have been blessed to have parents that emphasized the importance of hard work and dedication to my studies,” Childers said. “It is an honor to be recognized by Longview ISD for my professional and personal accomplishments.”

Registration is now open for Blinn’s Summer and Fall semesters. The Summer II semester runs July 5-Aug. 2, and the Fall semester begins Aug. 27. Registration for each semester is available until the first day of class.
