Blinn College police officer named Sexual Assault Resource Center’s ‘Professional of the Year’

A Blinn College police officer has been recognized for his dedication to educating students about consent and sexual assault awareness.
Chris Luttrell was named the Professional of the Year by the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC) of the Brazos Valley during its Voices Against Sexual Violence dinner and award ceremony in downtown Bryan.
Luttrell, who specializes in crime prevention at Blinn, was recognized for developing a sexual assault prevention program for all student activities across the district. The now-mandatory training, co-facilitated by SARC, educates students about the dangers and consequences of sexual violence and features information regarding local resources available to assault victims.
“I accepted this award on behalf of the Blinn College District,” Luttrell said. “It is an honor to partner with SARC to communicate this important message to our students.”
More than 600 Blinn students – including all student athletes – have undergone the training since its introduction in August 2017. The program is part of a nationwide effort to enhance sexual violence prevention efforts and achieve positive culture change on college campuses.
“As a former student athlete, I was inspired to start this conversation with our student athletes, as well as students in Blinn’s extracurricular activities,” Luttrell said. “I want to thank Blinn Athletic Director Scott Schumacher and Dean of Student Success Dr. Jeremy Thomas for allowing me to implement this training into the programs they oversee.”
The Voices Against Sexual Violence ceremony, which kicked off SARC’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign, honored local law enforcement leaders, health professionals, and community members and businesses who have demonstrated an outstanding effort to bring awareness to sexual assault. This is the third year SARC has named a Professional of the Year.
“Officer Luttrell has gone above and beyond to actively spread the message about SARC and the resources we provide,” said Kathryn Hendrix, Client Services Coordinator at SARC. “He has already consulted with us about how the program can improve and expand. We are excited to continue this partnership with Officer Luttrell and the Blinn College District to educate college students about sexual violence.”
