Blinn College-Brenham theatre arts students recognized at state play festival
Blinn theatre students pick up numerous awards for production of Peter Shaffer’s “Black Comedy”

April 9, 2018
The Blinn College-Brenham Campus Theatre Arts Program recently received high honors at the 2018 Texas Community College Speech & Theatre Association (TCCSTA) Play Festival at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
“We are very proud of our students and were very excited to see them walk away with these prestigious acting and technical awards,” said Brad Nies, Theatre Director. “Our students worked very hard to produce this difficult show, and we were thrilled that the respondents, as well as the directing professors, recognized that. “Black Comedy” is a difficult British farce, and the students in our program rose to the challenges this play offered.”
Blinn-Brenham’s production of Peter Shaffer’s “Black Comedy” was recognized with several awards. Kayla Adair received an Outstanding Performance Award for her role as Miss Furnival and Nicki Pinter received a superior award in technical for makeup design.
Excellent awards went to Brianna Hyman for dramaturgy and stage management, while Marcus Del Toro received excellent awards for dramaturgy and assistant stage management. Isaiah Edwards also received an excellent award in technical for sound design.
Nies directed the play, Kevin Patrick served as technical director, and Jennifer Patrick served as costume designer.
TCCSTA has been actively enriching the lives of Texas community college students since 1922. The annual Play Festival provides an opportunity for two-year colleges to share their work in a festival setting, receiving awards and important feedback from educated theatre critics. Productions are presented to the Play Festival assembly and receive verbal responses from two respected theatre educators. Students are eligible for awards in all areas including acting, directing, stage management, technical design, dramaturgy, special effects, and poster/program design.
Blinn College’s Division of Visual/Performing Arts and Kinesiology offers an Associate of Arts in theatre arts, which explores the fundamentals of theatre, including hands-on experience both on and off the stage. Blinn hosts a variety of student performances in a wide range of theatrical genres each year, and provide students the opportunity to learn from professional performers who visit the campus as part of the College’s Performing Arts Series.
Registration for May Minimester, Summer I and II, and Fall 2018 is open for currently enrolled students. Registration will be available for all students beginning Wednesday, April 11. For enrollment or financial aid information, visit Visual Performing Arts
