‘Education is crucial to our state’s economy,’ he says

State Rep. John Raney offered Blinn College students a first-hand perspective regarding the workings of the Texas Legislature during a visit to the College’s Bryan Campus on Friday, Feb. 3.

Raney, who serves District 14 in the Texas House of Representatives, was invited by Government Professor Gentry Woodard to speak to his Texas Government classes about topics relevant to their lives, including basic legislative processes, current bills, and education issues.

“We could talk about Mr. Raney in class, or we could hear from him in person,” Woodard said. “That is why I felt it was important to bring him here today. We appreciate what he does for Blinn and the community, and we appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to come by and visit with us.”

With the 85th Legislative Session currently underway, Raney informed students of the various issues on the table and the ways in which legislators work together to reach solutions. Raney spoke of his passion for education and its many benefits for Texas citizens.

“Education is crucial to our state’s economy,” he said. “Blinn has done an excellent job of not only preparing students for four-year universities, but also training students for a career.”

Students asked Raney about his political background and for his perspective regarding special legislative sessions and miscellaneous bills. In turn, Raney extended internship offers to the class and urged the students to become active in their government.

“You, the constituents, bring us the issues,” he said. “I always tell folks to tell me what and why they want certain things. One of the things I am most proud of has nothing to do with legislature – it is the connection you make with people.”

A sixth-generation Texan, Raney was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in December 2011 and serves Texas House District 14, which is comprised of Bryan and College Station.
