February 28, 2017

Blinn College-Brenham Campus Theatre Arts students and faculty recently showcased their skills for four-year universities and prospective students at the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TETA) TheatreFest held in Galveston.

“This gives us an opportunity to set up a booth and present Blinn College to prospective students,” said Brad Nies, Theatre Director. “Our students take part in workshops and audition their technical and acting abilities.”

Sophomore Tyler Garrison (Cypress) worked with technical theatre professors Kevin Patrick and Jennifer Patrick on a technical presentation for costume, makeup, and stage management. He received callbacks from 14 universities looking to recruit him.

Freshman Joshua Edwards (Cypress) won second place and a $200 prize for his entry to the TETA 24-Hour FilmFest. Edwards was awarded best screenplay for his short film titled, “Killer Quarter Cowboy.” Edwards shot the short film on his phone. Freshman Kayla Adair (Flatonia) was awarded best actress for her role in the film, and fellow students Joanna Guerrero, Cassin Villa-Lobos, and Caleb Wyrick each played parts in the film.

Kevin Patrick took an active role in a workshop regarding the future of a statewide field of study in drama, and Kevin Patrick and Jennifer Patrick each served as judges for DesignFest. Nies was a respondent for PlayFest and critiqued 15 original plays.

“Being a judge for those original plays was a great experience,” Nies said.

TheatreFest is a four-day celebration of educational theatre. The annual convention offers training and education for current theatre practitioners as well as future educators. Included in the event are more than 300 theatre and film-related workshops, playwriting contests, design contests, and scholarship auditions. In addition, the TETA TheatreFest includes live performances, special guest artists from around the world, and more than 100 commercial and educational exhibitors.
