Blinn offers September training courses for electricians, truck drivers, nurse aides, and pharmacy technicians

College’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program works directly with local employers to meet growing demand for electricians

August 31, 2017

Blinn College’s Division of Technical & Community Education will offer a variety of career training courses in Bryan this September, preparing students for high-demand careers as electricians, professional truck drivers, certified nurse aides, and pharmacy technicians.

Blinn’s technical and community education courses are designed to provide students the knowledge and abilities they need to enter the workforce immediately after completion of the courses. Many of these courses do not require a high school diploma and enrollment is fast and easy. As most of these courses are non-credit, students do not need to go through the College’s admission process to enroll. Programs vary in length and are offered with daytime, evening, and weekend options.

Business owners can enroll their employees in Blinn Technical & Community Education courses using Texas Workforce Commission Skills Development and Skills for Small Business funds, and Blinn staff can help businesses complete the request form. Blinn also offers students access to scholarships through the Blinn College Foundation, private grants, and Workforce Solutions.

For more information or to register for these courses, visit the Blinn Post Office Campus at 301 Post Office Street in Bryan. For additional information, visit www.blinn.edu/workforce or call 979-209-7205.

ELECTRICIAN TECHNICIAN & APPRENTICE PROGRAMS

Blinn’s Electrical Technician Program, running Tuesday, Sept. 12, through Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, meets twice per week and includes 240 hours of classroom instruction. Students who complete the course earn a certificate and their Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour safety training card. Graduates who earn their certificate through Blinn’s Electrician Program are qualified to enter the field as an apprentice.

Blinn’s Electrical Apprenticeship Program features four levels of instruction with approximately 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom training each year.

Blinn electrical apprenticeship courses – held weekly at the Blinn Workforce Education Training Center in College Station – teach students the theories behind the hands-on work they do on the job, including electrical theory, blueprint reading, mathematics, electrical code requirements, and safety and first aid practices.

An apprentice who completes the program is qualified to become a journeyman electrician licensed to work without direct supervision.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national demand for electricians will increase 14 percent between 2014 and 2024, creating almost 86,000 new jobs. According to data supplied by Workforce Solutions Brazos Valley, local demand for electricians is expected to be nearly identical, creating an average of 20 position openings each year with a mean hourly wage approaching $20 per hour.

PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVER

A new Professional Truck Driver course section opens Monday, Sept. 18, with classes meeting from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students learn to perform pre-trip, on-the-road and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections. Other skills include map reading, managing log books and cargo documentation, dispatch procedures, emergency responsibilities and regulations of transportation agencies. Students also learn road safety guidelines and specific laws applicable to professional drivers. At the conclusion of the program, instructors accompany students to the commercial driver’s license (CDL) testing facility in Hearne, where they may be eligible to leave with their CDL and a certificate of completion from Blinn.

Entry-level truck drivers can expect a starting wage of approximately $20 per hour, or an annual salary ranging between $40,000 and $60,000.

CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE

Blinn will offer new Certified Nurse Aide sections beginning Wednesday, Sept. 6, and Thursday, Sept. 21. Certified nurse aides (CNAs) provide basic patient care under the direction of nursing staff, including feeding, bathing, grooming, changing linens, and transporting patients. Nurse aides are often employed in nursing care facilities, where they frequently serve as principal caregivers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, CNA jobs are expected to grow 17 percent nationally between 2014 and 2024, with median pay of $26,590 per year.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

Blinn’s pharmacy technician course runs Tuesday, Sept. 12, through Tuesday, Oct. 17. Pharmacy technicians work under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and perform technical and clerical duties, including measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and recording medication dosages according to prescription orders.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to grow 9 percent in Texas between 2014 and 2024. Pharmacy technicians average a median annual wage of $33,080 state-wide.

The program includes instruction in pharmacology, pharmacy law and regulations, sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication safety, quality assurance, medication order entry and fill processes, inventory management, billing and information systems. Students who complete the course will be prepared to take the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.
