Blinn inducts 10 students into Sigma Kappa Delta honor society

English honor society welcomes full-time students with 3.0 GPA

April 10, 2017

The Blinn College-Bryan Campus chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD) recently inducted 10 students in an afternoon ceremony on campus.

SKD is the English honor society for two-year colleges. Founded in 1996 at Cottey College in Missouri, SKD provides cultural stimulation, encourages interest in literature and the English language, and promotes exemplary character and fellowship among its members.

Blinn’s Theta Gamma chapter has approximately 40 members, all whom have earned a cumulative 3.0-plus grade point average (GPA), have made at least a B in their English courses, and have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of total college coursework.

“Sigma Kappa Delta provides a great opportunity for students to connect over common interests in academics,” said Candice Melzow, SKD Advisor. “Students involved in Sigma Kappa Delta gain excellent leadership experience and better serve their campus and their community.”

Theta Gamma coordinates various service events each semester that benefit Blinn and the local community. During the Fall 2016 semester, the chapter raised funds for Still Creek Ranch, a local boarding school that serves neglected and abused children. Theta Gamma also wrote and distributed thank you letters to military troops stationed overseas and hosted free, campus-wide movie nights for Blinn students.

The chapter holds an induction ceremony each semester to welcome new members and celebrate with family, friends, and English faculty.

This year’s inductees included: Ashley Cook (Katy), Kalli Ellis (LaWard), Jessica Emola (Bryan), Grady C. Hefley, Madison Meekins (Tomball), Paige Mundt, Danielle Nguyen (Groves), Nathan Paine (College Station), Raeann Reid, and Logan Skyla Slacalek (Needville).
