Blinn freshman to serve as 2017-18 Blinn-Bryan Student Government Association president

My goal is to work with students to make Blinn the best it can be,’ says Danielle Duncan

November 3, 2017

Before taking a single class on the Blinn College-Bryan Campus, freshman Danielle “Dani” Duncan was ready to make a difference at her new school.

The College Station native joined the Blinn-Bryan Student Government Association (SGA) after taking Blinn government courses in high school through the College’s Dual Credit Program. Duncan turned her passion into action when she recently was selected as SGA’s newest president for the 2017-18 school year.

“I have known about Blinn my entire life and attending here has always been my first choice,” Duncan said. “I definitely wanted to be involved in student activities once I enrolled full-time. Serving as SGA president will be a great opportunity for me to see what is happening on our campus and assess the needs of my fellow classmates.”

The Blinn-Bryan SGA is a student-run organization that serves to voice student interest and concerns to the College’s administration. Additionally, SGA exists to provide students with leadership opportunities, incorporate service into their daily lives, and promote a welcoming and cohesive atmosphere for all Blinn students.

Duncan is majoring in health and kinesiology at Blinn with hopes of transferring to a Texas university with a physical therapy graduate program.

“I do not have definite plans for my future yet, so Blinn has been a great starting point,” she said. “It is smaller than a university, so I am able to have a better relationship with my professors and get to know my classmates better. It has been the introduction I needed to continue my education.”

Duncan is joined by new set of SGA officers for the 2017-18 school year: Vice President Michael LaCourt, Secretary Luis Garduno, and Parliamentarian Brianna Lontkowski.

With the Fall semester underway, the group has been touring campus, introducing themselves to various clubs and organizations, and searching for ways in which they can better serve Blinn students. First on the list: investigating the possibility of implementing water bottle fill-up stations around campus – a project initiated by last year’s SGA officers.

“SGA is really focusing on projects and activities that will make a broad impact on Blinn-Bryan.” Duncan said. “We are currently researching and assessing the need for these water stations and will begin to survey the student body in the upcoming weeks.”

SGA is currently looking for motivated students wanting to make an impact during their time at Blinn. The organization meets at 2 p.m. on the second and fourth Friday of each month in the Student Center F-120 (map). Blinn clubs and organizations present new ideas to those in attendance, allowing SGA to develop projects or initiatives to better serve the student population.

“We are definitely open for anyone who would like to join SGA,” Duncan said. “My goal is to get more students involved with campus matters and to work together to make Blinn the best it can be.”
