During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Blinn College District Board of Trustees authorized the administration to award and execute a contract with Collier Construction Company for the development of a parking lot adjacent to the new student housing facility currently under construction at the Blinn-Brenham Campus.
The $1.422 million contract will fund development of a 285-space parking lot with sidewalks, pedestrian lightings, and drainage improvements. The student housing facility, located at the corner of Saeger Street and Old Mill Creek Road, will house 465 students.
Development costs for the student housing facility are being funded by National Campus and Community Development (NCCD)-Blinn College Properties, LLC, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established to provide tax-exempt financing specifically for this project. Blinn and NCCD-Blinn College Properties will enter into a 40-year ground lease, and upon repayment by NCCD, the facility will revert to Blinn.
The new facility is expected to make an immediate impact on Blinn-Brenham Campus enrollment upon its completion in time for the Fall 2018 semester. The campus currently houses 1,326 students, more than any other community college in the state. Despite this, hundreds of students are placed on the housing wait list each year, reaching more than 900 students in Fall 2016.
In other business, the board authorized the administration to award and execute a one-year contract, renewable for a second year, with Oldham Goodwin Group, LLC, for real estate consultant services.
