The Blinn College Student Veteran Association will host a special Veteran Appreciation Ceremony at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the Blinn College-Bryan Campus as part of a special week celebrating military veterans and their service to this nation.
“We wanted to recognize not only Blinn student veterans, but all veterans in the community,” said Emily Erdmann, Faculty Advisor for the Student Veteran Association.
The ceremony will be hosted at the campus flagpole located in front of the Bryan Campus Library.
Bryan City Councilman Mike Southerland, a 22-year Army veteran, will serve as guest speaker. Southerland logged more than 900 combat hours as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War, and later served in many leadership positions. He retired as a Corps of Engineers Lieutenant Colonel in May 1989.
The Student Veteran Association has invited local veterans groups to participate. The ceremony will include an appreciation for all veterans and a moment of silence for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The ceremony will be part of Veterans Week on the Blinn-Bryan Campus. On Monday, Nov. 7, the entire campus community is encouraged to wear red, white and blue. The Student Veteran Association will host a community veterans fair offering information and resources for veterans from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8., and on Wednesday the organization will host a barbecue fundraiser. The Student Veteran Association will host a prisoner of war/missing in action memorial table in the Student Center on Friday.
Blinn’s Student Veteran Association was founded to assist student veterans in transitioning to college life and attaining internships and scholarships.
