Blinn recognizes endowed scholarship donors at annual luncheon

Blinn Foundation offers 230 endowed scholarships valued at more than $16 million

October 12, 2015

Blinn College recognized the donors of five scholarships – including three new scholarships – during a special luncheon Saturday at the Blinn-Brenham campus.

With the addition of this year’s new scholarships, Blinn offers 230 endowed scholarships valued at more than $16 million.

“This luncheon is a celebration,” said Dr. Mary Hensley, Blinn district president/CEO. “We gather to celebrate the outstanding students who have assembled to study at Blinn College, and we celebrate the acts of generosity that have made higher education possible for so many in our community.”

This year’s newly-endowed scholarships included:

  • The Robert Fritz Hackemack Memorial Endowed Scholarship for students from Fayette County with at least a 3.5 grade-point average (GPA). The scholarship was established in memory of Robert Fritz Hackemack, who retained a lifelong quest for learning and often reminded his grandchildren that education was a worthy investment.
  • The Elise Kuehn Eichler Memorial Endowed Scholarship for freshman students from Washington County. The scholarship was established in memory of Elise Kuehn Eichler, who always encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their goals.
  • The Lions International District 2-S5 Endowed Scholarship for high school graduates from Austin, Bastrop, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Comal, Fayette, Gonzales, Grimes, Hays, Lee, Madison, Robertson and Washington Counties. Lions International established the scholarship to develop future community leaders and in recognition of the support given to them by Blinn through the use of their facilities for Lions conventions, conferences and seminars.

Additionally, the Foundation recognized the donors who added gifts to pre-existing existing scholarships:

  • The Schoenvogel Family Scholarships for deserving students demonstrating financial need in the Licensed Vocational Nursing or Associate Degree Nursing programs. The scholarships were established in recognition of Dr. C.W. Schoenvogel’s service to Blinn College and the community.
  • The Janette & Ruben Schmidt Memorial Scholarship for graduates of Round Top-Carmine High School with at least a 2.5 GPA. The scholarships were established in recognition of Janette and Ruben Schmidt’s strong belief in education.

The Foundation supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.

Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has raised funds to purchase classroom equipment and supplies, and help launch major construction projects across Blinn’s campuses, including the A.W. Hodde, Jr. Technical Education Center, the J. Hal and Allyne Machat Music Facility, the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex and the Bert and Mae Dean Wheeler Residence Hall.
