Blinn College alumni association announces new name

Ex-Students Association is now Alumni & Friends

The Blinn College Ex-Students Association has always opened its doors to the many community partners who believe in the 130-year-old institution’s mission and values. Now it has a new name to reflect that inclusive policy.

The Association voted unanimously at its annual meeting Saturday to change its name to Blinn College Alumni & Friends, providing a more encompassing title for an organization that supports the College’s cultural, athletic and social programs and assists the College in meeting its goals and objectives.

The newly-named Alumni & Friends also selected Jim Kolkhorst as the organization’s new president. Don Wilhelm, who served a decade as the College’s athletic director, served two terms as the Ex-Students president.

Wilhelm initiated the discussions regarding the organization’s name to reflect the diversity of its membership.

“Whether you took a semester here or you studied at Blinn for years, you can make a tremendous impact on the future of Blinn College and so we wanted to make our name a little friendlier,” he said.
Kolkhorst has been president of Kolkhorst Petroleum since 1997, and in 2004 he created the Rattlers convenience store chain name and image, which operates 15 retail locations in the region. Kolkhorst’s term as president begins immediately.

Alumni & Friends also selected Renee Mueller as first vice president, Dr. Deanna Alfred as second vice president, Rebecca Ruffino as secretary and Doug Schoppe as treasurer. Dr. Dennis Crowson, Patrick Gilbert and J. Hal Machat will continue to serve on the board of directors, while James Grimm, Matthew Wehring and Stoney Lacina were selected to 2013-15 terms.

During last year’s reorganization, both Alumni & Friends and the Alumni Lettermen Association were brought into the College’s Institutional Advancement & Governmental Affairs division, which works to connect communities with the College’s education opportunities and services through collaboration and outreach.

“The move has helped to keep our alumni informed of the many ways in which Blinn partners with the community,” said Cathy Boeker, associate vice president of Institutional Advancement & Governmental Affairs. “By coming together with departments such as the Foundation, the Small Business Development Center and Star of the Republic Museum, our alumni can strengthen their relationship with many of the College’s community-oriented programs.”
